What’s on Michel’s agenda for ALA in 2027? | In conversation with Lawyers Weekly

10 September 2026

Margalit Injury Lawyers Managing Principal and Australian Lawyers Alliance National President Michel Margalit has spoken with Lawyers Weekly about her priorities for the year ahead and the role plaintiff lawyers play in protecting the rights of ordinary Australians.

In the interview, Michel reflects on her career in personal injury law, the establishment of Margalit Injury Lawyers and her approach to representing injured people.

She also discusses some of the issues she intends to focus on during her term as ALA National President, including protecting common law rights, strengthening information-sharing between plaintiff lawyers across Australia and continuing to build an organisation equipped to advocate strongly into the future.

A key priority will be the ALA’s advocacy surrounding proposed changes to small business insurance and civil liability laws. Michel also spoke about the importance of ensuring injured people retain meaningful access to compensation, particularly when they are faced with significant power imbalances.

The interview also looks back at Michel’s work through the firm’s lens, including the Monash IVF class action, which settled in 2024 for $56 million.

Across her work at Margalit and with the ALA, Michel described a philosophy that has shaped much of her career: “My ambition is to leave things better than I initially encountered them.”

It is a principle that continues to inform Michel’s approach to advocacy, leadership and the work of our firm.
