As seen on ABC Four Corners’ Collision, the long-term impact of concussion in Australian Rules football can no longer be ignored.

For many current and former players, the issue is not the concussion itself. It’s what happens after.

From 1 May 2026, AFL players no longer have disability insurance cover through Zurich for concussion, traumatic brain injury, CTE, post-concussion syndrome or neurological impairment linked to brain injury.

Footballers are also legislatively barred from receiving WorkCover. So where do they turn for support when their lives are upended by brain injury?

While the AFL Hardship Fund might provide a handful of players some support, it is grossly inadequate. The AFL Hardship Fund masquerades as being as good as WorkCover, but in truth it provides just a fraction of the benefits. Certainly not enough to care for players living with lifelong disabling injury.

These players gave their bodies, minds and futures to the game we love and celebrate. The question is simple: how can we allow ANY member of society to fall between the cracks?
